The “work from home” trend has been a major highlight of 2020 — and possibly far beyond that. This trend, which has allowed people to stay at home and work remotely, has been beneficial for many in a variety of ways.
Everybody is familiar with the fact that the coronavirus pandemic has played a significant role in the rise of the work from home (WFH) trend. The closure of offices, restaurants and other places of business have meant that many workers have been unable to physically go to work, leading to an increasing number of people WFH.
This has had both positive and negative implications. On the one hand, WFH has given workers the opportunity to have more control over their work environment, without having to deal with the stress of rush hour commuting and navigating office politics. It has also allowed families to spend more time together, whether that’s riding out the pandemic or simply enjoying a relaxed weekend.
However, it is not all positive. Many people struggle to find the motivation to work from home, the lack of a break from work to chat with co-workers can be draining and it can be difficult to manage a difficult work/life balance when everything takes place within the same environment.
Given the uncertain circumstances of the pandemic, it is likely that WFH will remain prevalent for the foreseeable future. That said, employers should look to create an environment which allows their people to feel comfortable, motivated and engaged whilst working from home. Whether this is through flexible working hours, the provision of additional resources or support or even team bonding activities, it is important to ensure that those who are working from home are able to do so without sacrificing their wellbeing.
