Chronological Resume Outline

A Chronological Resume is one of the more common resumes used by todays work force. Its main purpose is to bring focus onto the applicants’ experience and job history. Many companies prefer potential employees to submit their resumes in this format because of the logical display of detailed information present, consisting of “Personal Details”, “Job Experience”, “Education”, “Skills”, and other optional fields. This outline will give you a basis on how to go about developing your Chronological Resume. It is recommended that, after you use the following outline to develop your own work, you modify your work to better fit the specific job requirements your employer is looking for.

Objectives (Optional Field):

This field is optional and includes what goals and / or ambitions you may have, both in your professional life as well as a potential employee for the company you are applying to work for.

Experience / Employment History:

This section informs the employer what job positions you had, starting from the most recent. If you were an applicant with a lot of job history, it may be reasonable to decide to only mention the jobs that correlate to the characteristics the employer is looking for in an employee.

Details regarding each job position should be included, the most appropriate of which would be: time served, special accomplishments, major daily functions that were required of you, experience in specific areas of work, and other responsibilities. A format for this field would be as follows:

  • Job Position 1 and years served. Major daily functions. Areas of experience. Special accomplishments.
  • Job Position 2 and years served. Major daily functions. Areas of experience. Special accomplishments.

Education:

The education field incorporates the applicants’ academic achievements, honors, and rewards. Very rarely does anyone include his or her grade scores in this section or in any part of the Chronological Resume. The list of achievements should be listed in order of importance, having the most important achievement as your first piece of information. Normally this information would be listed in a “bullet” format.

Skills:

This field includes any and all relevant skills and abilities you might have that the employer might appreciate. Experience with specific software, the ability to speak different languages fluently, and any other details you decide to include would be listed in this field.

References:

The references field includes the full names and contact details of past employers, professors, or any other creditable figure that would vouch for you and give his or her point of view in relation to your work ethic, personal traits, and so forth. Friends and family should not be included in this field.

A Chronological Resume is one of the most used resume formats due to the high employer approval rate. Having chosen this format for your paper, there are some key aspects you should strive to remember. Molding your specific Chronological Resume to your potential employer’s needs is of the essence. Details that are not of interest for the job being applied for should be excluded. Also, keep the resume between one and two pages long, literate, and to the point.

Dear Mr. John Fisher,

I was informed of a job position opening for a computer technician in your company, Johns Computer Systems Co., which I believe I would fit into perfectly.

I have worked with computers for my entire life, both in my personal and professional life. I was the chief technical manager for SAND COMPUTERS INC. and stayed in that position for a total of five years. Customer satisfaction is my number one focus as a professional, I work after hours if it is needed of me, and I am very easy to work with.

Some of my recognizable skills that would be very useful for a computer technician in your company are:

  • Experience with C / C++ / C# / Python / Java programming languages
  • Capable of building my own computer with the right parts
  • Very efficient debugging and troubleshooting skills for a broad range of software issues

I am a very dedicated worker, with a lot of passion for what I do. There is no doubt in my mind that I would exceed anyone’s expectations of me as a computer technician in your company and I would love it if we could meet and further discuss my qualifications for your job position opening. I have attached my resume so that you may take a look at my background. I hope to hear from you shortly.

Sincerely,

JOSH MILLER

A cover letter is your way of introducing yourself in your own words to your potential employer. Companies very much appreciate your effort to make a good impression, but don’t get carried away. Too much information is not what they are looking for. A one paged cover letter is more than enough to introduce yourself and it is much easier on the eye. The key points to consider while writing your cover letter are to stay professional, fresh, literate, and focus on only writing relevant information to the job being applied for.

Writing an Apology Letter – Make it About Them

Writing-an-Apology-Letter-–-Make-it-About-ThemWriting an apology letter can be difficult. What do you write? How do you make it meaningful? How do you ensure that you get your point across without sounding negative or forced? It is important to remember that everyone does something they regret at some point or another and simple things can harm a relationship, whether it is personal or business based. At times, it isn’t appropriate to walk up to someone and apologize face to face, so an apology letter is needed to smooth the edges and bring you back to speaking terms.  Here are ten practical tips to ensure that your apology letter brings the results you are after.

Make the Letter about Them

When writing an apology letter, leave out the fluff. This letter is about them and the wrong they feel has been done to them. Talking about you in the letter, other than the fact that you feel bad for the way you treated them or something you said, could make the situation worse, and make the letter feel more forced than open.

Forget about Your Skills

When writing an apology letter, your level of skill in composing a letter is not in question here. It is about what the letter means, and what thoughts you are trying to get through. The letter does not have to be perfect, witty, or clever. It needs to be honest, heartfelt, and clear.

Determine what you are Sorry For

When you are confused about what you are feeling, what the other person is feeling, and what you should be sorry for, this is not a good time to write an apology letter. You should take the time to determine what you are actually sorry for, why you feel bad for doing it, and why the other person feels upset or offended because you did do it. What happened that hurt the other person’s feelings? What can you say to make it better? Did you mean what you said? Chances are you did not mean what you said or did, especially since you are considering writing the letter.

What Were the Repercussions of Your Actions

You may feel the need to apologize for your actions, but rushing to apologize may not be the best idea. It is important to evaluate the situation carefully. Did thing happen in the process that upset other people, or hurt feelings deeper than you realized? Were you hurt by what happened? Are you upset about what went on? If so, make sure to have everything fixed in your mind before you begin writing the apology letter.

No Excuses

When you are telling someone you are sorry, but you follow up with an excuse for your behavior, the apology is not heartfelt. In essence, excuses ruin an apology. The person you are writing to does not want to hear your justification, they want you to confess your actions, and know that you are sorry for your actions.

How Can You Mend the Situation

Even if words are not enough to fix the situation, sometimes, you can do things to help make your apology clearer. For example, if there was money lost in a transaction, or money taken, giving that money back could offer a better resolution to the problem. Think of something you can do to make the situation better. How can your actions fix the situation at hand?

Stay Focused and Keep It Short

The difficult part of writing an apology letter is that it goes against yourself preservation instincts. You have to open yourself up and admit your wrong doing. No one ever feels comfortable admitting a mistake, so it is easy to go off course writing your letter. If this happens, remove everything that is off track. The letter should be on point and should not involve your feelings or any rebuttal you may have.

Own the Blame

An apology letter defeats the purpose if you are going to push the blame onto someone else. This is the case if you are blaming the person receiving the letter or someone who was on the sidelines. Blaming others will water down your apology and the person you are writing too will be able to see through it. If you are not sorry, or you blame someone else, you are wasting your time apologizing.

Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say

Before you sit down to write a letter, make sure you mean what you are going to say. Making an apology just to calm a situation does not benefit anyone, especially if you are still bitter about a situation. This will not accomplish the goal you are trying to reach. Keep the letter to the topics you mean, as these words are the one that you will be held to.

Get it Right

Whether you are hand writing the letter or you are typing it, getting it right is the most important thing you can do. When you begin, jump right to the point and that is, “I’m Sorry…”

Purpose

In a market facing recession   the search for stable, well- paying jobs can be quite challenging. One may possess the necessary qualifications and the experience but stands to lose out to another, who approaches a perspective hirer with appropriate recommendations. A recommendation letter is an established form of official correspondence, intended to support a candidate’s application for a job that he or she is interested in.

Language

While such letters may be written in an informal style and language, this   would depend upon how well the sender knows the addressee. Care must be taken to keep the matter simple and devoid of all grammatical and syntax errors. A loosely or carelessly worded letter could actually damage a candidate’s chances of landing a job.

Salutation

Since such letters are written in an individual’s official capacity and addressed to a recipient holding an official position in a company, salutation must be appropriate. It is acceptable to start by a simple, “Dear Sir/ Madam”. Before signing off, it is customary to thank the addressee, adding, “Yours sincerely”.

Conventions

A letter of recommendation is a form of official correspondence and must   follow all established norms of official writing. Mandatory Ingredients would include the following:

  • Name, designation and address of the person to whom  the letter addressed.
  • File reference number of the originator.
  • Name, designation and address of the sender.
  • Mention of the enclosures being.

Length

A letter must neither be too long and nor too brief. Length would obviously vary from requirement to requirement but with practice one would realise the need to remain concise and focused on the purpose for which the letter is being written.   It   is appropriate   to break up your letter into paragraphs, each highlighting a different aspect.

Things to Watch Out for

Before recommending someone at any level, first you need to be convinced that the individual indeed is worthy of your recommendation. Making recommendation without being aware of a person’s actual capabilities puts you at tremendous risk of losing professional reputation.

Dear Mr Sudoku,

Allow me to introduce Mr Pranitosh Desai, who has been a regular employee of my company for the last ten years and has steadily risen up the ranks to hold the most coveted position that of GM Operations. You would be familiar with his reputation as he has been interacting with your research staff on many important developmental issues in the past.

Mr Desai has risen to this level only through sheer grit, determination and will power, displaying tremendous maturity in dealing with subordinates, peers and superiors alike at all levels.  The individual’s professional qualifications and reputation have been an example for others to emulate and I have no hesitation in admitting that this company would lose its main architect after he leaves to pursue higher goals as he must.
